Movie Review: Sisterakas

Sisterakas

This movie review may be late, but I say, better late than never! At P340+ million, Sisterakas (gay lingo for soul sisters) is the country's highest-grossing film and it's pretty interesting to note given that it's been released during the most competitive time in the country's local film industry--the Metro Manila Film Festival. Seeing its sequel already made me laugh. Seeing the film made me laugh and laugh.

Happy Birthday, Kris!

Kris Aquino turns 41.

Kris Aquino celebrates her 41st birthday today. And what better gift can I offer to a star whose shows I have grown up watching than to write a little tribute to the life and career of a start that to this day remains unmatched in the industry. She began as a bankable movie actress in the 1990s, eventually parlaying her popularity and wits into becoming a successful talk show and game show host. In the early 2000s, she emerged as a critically acclaimed actress plus earning the monicker Horror Queen of Philippine Cinema. She also enjoys considerable success in the recording and publishing industries, as well as with her line of kitchen collections.

Happy Birthday, Krissy!

Birth, Childhood and Education

Kristina Bernadette Cojuangco Aquino was born on Feb. 14, 1972, the youngest daughter of Benigno Aquino, Jr. and Corazon Cojuangco, scions of powerful and landed families in Tarlac. Her father was a former senator and presidential aspirant who was martyred in 1983 at the height of the Marcos Regime. Her mother was the 11th and first female president of the Republic of the Philippines, while her brother, Benigno Aquino III was elected 15th president in 2010. Together with her family, she spent her early years in Boston, where her family was exiled during the Martial Law era.

Movie Star

After a bloodless revolution that toppled then-President Ferdinand Marcos and installed her mother as president, teenager Aquino was put to limelight. Her forays in show business began with guest stints in talk shows, television dramas, and comedies. She made her film debut in 1990, where she was cast opposite comedian Rene Requiestas in the colossally successful comedy film, Pido Dida. The film was the highest-grossing movie in the Philippines at the time, breaking existing box-office records that year. In 1991, she was crowned the country's box-office queen. The film spawned two successful sequels, Pido Dida: Kasal Na and Pido Dida: May Kambal Na. She solidified her bankability with a slew of commercially-successful true-to-life massacre films, popular during the early 1990s, such as Vizconde Massacre (1993), The Elsa Castillo Story: Ang Katotohanan, Myrna Diones Story, and Fatima Buen Story (all 1994), the last film earning her a Gawad Urian nomination. However, critics panned her acting as stiff and mechanical. But with her enormous success in this genre, Aquino was hailed by the press as Massacre Queen.

Talk Show Queen

Aquino's undeniable hosting wit landed her a talk show in ABS-CBN. In 1996, Today with Kris Aquino was launched, which went on air weekdays until 2001. The show was the first interactive talk show in Philippine TV and was touted as the country's response to America's The Oprah Winfrey Show. In 1999, she joined the Sunday afternoon celebrity talk show The Buzz, where she co-hosted with Boy Abunda until 2007, when she took maternity leave. She made her come back in 2008 but eventually left the show in 2008 after her brother was elected president.

Aquino was also host to several more talk shows: Morning Girls (2002-2004), Good Morning, Kris (2004), Boy & Kris (2007-2009), and SNN: Showbiz News Ngayon (2009-2010). In 2011, Aquino returned to daytime talk show via KrisTV, a spinoff to her 1996 talk show.

Forays in Primetime TV

Kris also appeared in a number of top rating prime time soap operas: Hiram (2004-2005), Sineserye Presents Panayin sa Sindak si Barbara (2008) and Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo (2010).

Award Winning Actress

2002 was a banner year for Aquino's film career. After a long absence (she made her last film that time in 1995), she made a successful comeback via the family drama Mano Po, the first series of the long-running movie franchise. Her role as a submissive and weak-willed scion of a wealthy Chinese family earned her Best Supporting Actress awards in the Metro Manila Film Festival, Pasado Award, PMPC Star Awards for Movies, FAMAS Award, and KAPPT Award. She also appeared in two more Mano Po installments, Mano Po 2: My Home (2003) and Mano Po 6: A Mother's Love (2009).

Horror Queen

In 2004, Kris began starring in a movie genre where she shines the most—horror. In 2004, she was cast in Feng Shui, a film that featured Chinese influences and omen, the country's reply to the wave of Asian horrors that was very popular in the early 2000s. It earned P137 million, making it the highest-grossing Filipino movie in 2004. Her success earned her her second crown as Box-Office Queen. In 2006, she co-starred with Claudine Barretto in Sukob (2006), which depicted the Filipino superstition that one should not marry within a year when an immediate relative dies or gets married. With Sukob, Kris Aquino yet again broke box-office records—the film grossed a whooping P203 million, the first Filipino film to reach the elusive P200-million mark as well as the highest-grossing film that time. In 2007, she shared her third Box-Office Queen crown with Claudine Barretto. Aquino's succeeding horror flicks were big winners at the box-office as well. Dalaw (2010), which grossed P125 million, was the third biggest moneymaker during the 2010 Metro Manila Film Festival, while Segunda Mano (2011) was earned P126.6 million, earning the film the second spot during the 2011 Metro Manila Film Festival.

Game Show Queen

In 2001, Kris made her prime time debut via her first—and most memorable—game show, Game KNB, where her tagline, “korek,” which she quipped after a contestant made the right answer, became a popular expression among the Filipinos to this day. The game show evolved through the years and many other hosts followed Aquino, although her stint is considered the “golden era” of Game KNB. Aquino also made impact with another game show Kapamilya Deal or No Deal, the country's franchise for the famous American game show. The show's extreme popularity was the main reason why it was extended for several times until it had to be ended prior to Aquino's maternity leave. Aquino also hosted the Philippine version of Wheel of Fortune, Pinoy Bingo Night, and The Price is Right. She also hosted the noontime variety show, Pilipinas Win na Win, but had to left the show after two months per decision of the management.

Celebrity Endorser

Kris is the face of dozens of products. In fact, her endorsements alone rake her tens of millions of pesos. Since 2009, she has held the record of being the country's number one celebrity endorser, lending her name and image to some of the most recognizable products like Pantene, Olay Total Effects, Maggi Magic Sarap, Nido, and Safeguard.

Recording Artist

Kris Aquino's inspirational compilation albums, feature different singers, were also top-selling at the time of their released. Her five albums, Songs of Love and Healing, Love and Inspiration, The Greatest Love, Blessings of Love, and My Heart's Journey, all registered platinum status.

Magazine Editor

In 2007, K Magazine, where Kris is the Executive Editor, was launched. It contained snippets of everything about Kris Aquino, her love, family, passion, and inspiring stories. The magazine remains the biggest selling celebrity magazine.

K Everyday

In 2009, Kris launched K Everyday in partnership with ABS-CBN Licensing. The collection showcased cooking collection, kitchen collection, plastic collection, and stationeries, each hand-picked by her which she thought are helpful in making everyday life comfortable.

As the Queen of All-Media graces her 41st year, her star remains shimmering as ever and there's no sign of stopping.

Personal Life

Aquino was the domestic partner of actor Philip Salvador. They had a son, Joshua. In 2005 she married basketball player James Yap. In 2007, she gave birth to a son, James “Bimby” Aquino Yap, now a highly in-demand child product endorser. In 2010, she and Yap were separated, their marriage officially annulled just recently.

Sukob - Movie Review and Free Showing

Sukob, the highest-grossing horror movie of the Philippine cinema, stars Horror Queen Kris Aquino and Optimum Star Claudine Barretto.

Sukob is another Kris Aquino vehicle that made her stood out in a genre where she gives her best. Meanwhile, this is Claudine Barretto's first- and so far her only- foray in horror. When both stars met on screen, what came out as a horrific horror movie, considered by many as one of the best horror films to grace the cinema. Add the directing prowess of seasoned and award winning Chito Rono and you'll have a movie that's worth watching again and again.

The film showcases the Filipino belief that no siblings should get married on the same year.

Synopsis

Sandy (Kris Aquino), an overseas worker, comes home to wed Dale (Wendell Ramos). Unexpected things happen prior and after her wedding. Her secondary sponsors, and later on, her friends and relatives disappear one by one. More mysterious things happen when Sandy sees her wedding photos. The people who disappeared were headless on the photos. Joya (Maja Salvador), Sandy's psychic cousin, tells her she is cursed by the Sukob. Sandy is puzzled because no one in the family died or married, until she finds out that she has a half-sister, Diana (Claudine Barretto). They seek the help of a shaman, who tells them that one must sacrifice to put the curse to a stop.

Stay put and get yourself ready for a horror-rific movie adventure with Sukob! Enjoy the free showing!

Movie Review

"Unlike most local pictures of the same genre Sukob succeeds as a horror, suspense thriller," praised the CBCP World. "Right from the beginning, ambience starts to build up with the extensive panning of old abandoned houses.

"Visuals with well chosen details, some flashed quickly on screen, as well as effective sound effects including sudden jolts and booms, keep the viewers on edge.  The ingenious interweaving of the stories of two women in similar circumstances keeps the moviegoers' interest. "

Nevertheless, "the sudden switching from one locale to another" at the start of the film was  "confusing to the spectator who has not gotten a 'handle' to the story."

The use of symbols and other devices in the film was exquisitely done, while the cast, did their best  performances.

"Editing is tight," continued CBCP Words, with all-praises given to "Chito Roño for his creativity as director and writer."

Foreign viewers also lauded sukob.

One vacationer from New York said Sukob interests him a lot because it has "those sudden scary moments that make you jump out of your seat.

"I am not Filipino but that plays no role in being able to like this movie. I watched this with my girlfriend (who is Filipina) and we both loved it. Both Kris Aquino & Claudine Barretto did a nice job. A must see movie for any Horror fan," he continues.

Another foreign viewer noted: "Most of the horror is atmospheric--the director gets a lot of mileage out of a creepy little flower girl and some swirling leaves--and overall the story is more poignant than gory. There's a set of dichotomies at play throughout the movie, which I thought was interesting: it's a palimpsest of urbanity and wealth on top of a humbler, darker existence."

Segunda Mano - Movie Review

More surprises, thicker plots, stellar cast- These await viewers in Segunda Mano.

I have nothing but pure praises for Segunda Mano. From start until the end, I fell in love with it. This is the only horror film that made me laugh, teary-eyed, shocked, stunned, and horrified, so I bet it's worth watching for all! Star Cinema, Agostodos Pictures, and MJM Productions grabbed stars that excelled in their respective genres. The result? A collage of cast that brought out the best in their talents. No one outshone the other, but each gave a tour de force performance that made Segunda Mano perhaps one of the most intriguing movies. Intriguing not because of sensual scenes or anything we used to tagged the word along. Intriguing in the sense that you'll be intrigued to know who's the good and who's the bad, who's the guardian that looks after the protagonist and her loved ones, and who's the killer, the culprit that does the killing.

Two thumbs up for Kris Aquino's role as Mabel, the long-suffering daughter who lives with her mom (Helen Gamboa) and is haunted by a heart breaking past that she hasn't let go for 20 years. Single and simple, she runs an antique shop and finds a comic friend in Anna (Bangs Garcia).

One rainy evening, as the evenings in the movie were set in downpour scenes, he meets Ivan (Dingdong Dantes), an architect and a single father, whom he falls in love with. Then the haunting comes when Ivan's wife, Mariela (Angelica Panganiban), begins to show up. Mariela's possessions begin to make their way to Mabel's hands. First the red bag, then her red dress, and later her black car. Then came of the death of Mariela's best friend who flirts with Ivan, and of Dindo (Jhong Hilario), Anna's boyfriend. Anna believes it was Mariela who did it, so she brings up the case to Ivan but he shrugs off the claim. She seeks help of a psychic but it was to no avail. Then in a sweep of events, everything is revealed about the ghost and the killings. This is where the twist of the film takes place.

Kris Aquino shines once more in the horror-suspense flicks. The facial expression, the scream, they are all superb. If you fell in love with Feng Shui, Sukob, and Dalaw, bet your money with Segunda Mano and you'll have one great time! The film is no second banana. The plot isn't predictable as some would say upon seeing the teasers. The scripts are excellently written, and the characters did justice to their role.

Dingdong Dantes' performance is superb. As Ivan the father, he is loving and caring, as Ivan the lover, he is sincere and romantic. But there's more to find out! His is complex, unpredictable. If you watch him portray his role in this film, you're like watching a calm lake on a sunny day and a restless sea on a stormy night at the same time.

Helen Gamboa also lent her acting prowess. I made the wrong impression that she's just another vase at the unnoticed, corner table. She she's not. There were scenes when she shone and in it she glittered in her dramatic best. The breakdown scene when she made Mabel felt loved and her near-death moment when someone unexpected came to save her. These are her moments in the film that made her stand out.

Bangs Garcia is not to be left out. As Kris Aquino's best friend Anna, she is talkative, tactless, kikay, frank, stylish, and of course, concerned. She steals the scene and stops the show. I rolled out laughing when she ran across the other side of the highway to throw the bag and the dress all while screaming to her lungs in a hilarious manner.

Mosang also lent her comic timing in the film. As the psychic, Kris and Helen frequents her in the hopes of communicating with a dead loved one. Later, Kris sought her help to rid off the ghost.

And there's Angelica Panganiban who plays Dingdong's wife. The restless ghost, the victim denied from justice. Dingdong thinks she ran away and went with his lover, but her hauntings proved she is dead. She is a surprise, a twist, and the key to solving the mystery of why the film is titled Segunda Mano!

I think Segunda Mano fared well and better ahead a pack of mediocre movies had  they made the film either 100 percent horror, or 100 percent comedy. I bet it'll break records in the festival had this been made a comedy. Or so I think. Anyway, I had a great time watching. Yes, it's a cross between horror, comedy, drama, and thriller, but if you stand in between  that cross, you will come to appreciate that in some ways, Segunda Mano is worth buying a ticket to the movie house.

MMFF Showdown - Segunda Mano

Starring Queen of All Media Kris Aquino and Heartthrob Dingdong Dantes, Segunda Mano promises a worthy scream that's worth watching again and again.

Segunda Mano offers moviegoers a double treat, as they get to see two of the country's biggest stars from two of opposing TV stations join forces for one film that is set to terrify and leave audience screaming from start to finish. For the first time, ABS-CBN's Kris Aquino and GMA's Dingdong Dantes team up for Segunda Mano.

This is also the first time that Bb. Joyce Bernal will direct a horror film. Of Segunda Mano  (which means second hand or pre-owned), she said in an interview with PEP that, "May istorya bawat bagay, lalo na ‘pag pre-owned, ‘di ba?

“Sometimes may mga naiiwang energy, kahit na bagay ‘yan. May unfinished business. So, kapag sobrang tindi no’ng mga pangyayaring ‘yon, you get the feeling, the vibes, kung anuman ‘yong naiwan doon na napakalakas. Kung sensitive ka or kung ikaw mismo mayroong unfinished business, makukuha mo ang vibes.”

Joining Aquino and Dantes is a powerhouse cast that includes versatile actress Angelica Panganiban, Jong Hilario, Bangs Garcia, and veteran actress Helen Gamboa.

The film is written by Joel Mercado.
