Gabourey Sidibe |
Gabourey Sidibe was just like anyone of us before she hit
stardom. Until she was given her break in 2009 when she was offered to star in Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by
Sapphire.
Born on May 6, 1983, her mother, Alice Tan Ridley, is an
American Gospel and R & B singer, who appeared in the fifth season of
American Idol in 2010. Her father, Ibnou Sidibe, is a taxi driver who hailed from Senegal.
Prior to her acting career, Sidibe worked as a receptionist
at the Fresh Air Fund’s office.
In Precious,
Gabourey Sidibe played the eponymous character, a 16-year-old girl who was
illiterate, obese and a mother of two (she was raped by her father). The film
depicted Precious’ plight from the hands of her abusive mother.
The role garnered her critical acclaim, awards from various
film critics’ circles, as well as best actress nominations from the Academy of
Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Golden Globe, SAG and BAFTA.
