Enrique Iglesias |
Enrique Iglesias’ good looks, well-built physique, oozing
sex appeal and world-class talent all add up to make him not only a great
singer, but a popular celebrity adored by millions of fans world-wide. Born to
a celebrity father and a socialite mother, at a very young age, it seems that
Enrique was already poised to leave a mark of his own.
Enrique Miguel Iglesias Preysler was born on May 8, 1975. He
is the youngest son of Spanish singer Julio Iglesias and Filipina socialite and
magazine writer Isabel Preysler.
Iglesias’ career music career was launched in the mid-90s by
the American Spanish Language record label Fonovisa.
His first album Enrique
Iglesias, was released in 1995. It contained a collection of light rock
ballads. It rocked the market overnight and sold more than 500,000 copies in just
one week, a feat rarely achieved by a foreign language album in the American market.
with three months in the market, the album sold over a million copies and went Gold
in Portugal.
The release of Vivir
(To Leave) in 1997, solidified Iglesias' status as the hottest Latin-American singer of his
generation. In fact, the strength of Iglesias’s record sales placed him in
direct competition with any English language music that year.
In 1998, Cosas del
Amor (Things of Love) was released. The album was noted for its more mature
theme, and such popular singles "Esperanza" and "Nunca Te
Olvidaré", topped the Latin singles chart and further galvanized his
status in the Latin market.
Iglesias eventually emerged as one of the biggest stars in
Latin America and the Hispanic Market in the U.S. By the end of the decade, he
was already the biggest selling Spanish-language performer.
By the advent of the 2000s, Iglesias made a successful crossover
into the mainstream field. He signed as multi-album deal with Universal Music
Group for whopping $48,000,000. Universal Music Latino will release his Spanish
albums, while Interscope is in charge of his English recordings.
His first full CD in English was Enrique.
In 2001, Escape
was released, so far, his biggest selling and most successful album. Escape’s first single, "Hero",
was a phenomenal hit in the United Kingdom and in many other countries.
In 2002, Iglesias released Quizás (Perhaps), his fourth Spanish album. It debuted number 12 on
the Billboard 200 albums chart, breaking records the Spanish language album with
the highest placement on the chart at the time. Quizás sold one million copies in just one week, and it held the
record as the fastest-selling Spanish language album until 2007.
Iglesias’s seventh studio album, 7, was released, after which he embarked on his biggest world tour
to date.
Insomniac was
released in 2007. The album was named that way because it was recorded mainly
at night.
In 2008, Iglesias released 85/08 Exitos, a compilation of some of his greatest Spanish hits,
including his seventeen songs which hit # 1 in the Hot Latin Tracks chart. Two
new songs were included in the track, too.
In 2010, Iglesias parted with Interscope and signed a record
deal with Universal Republic, another Universal Music Group label. In July Euphoria, was released, first bilingual
album which contained seven English and six Spanish songs. The album was
well-received, winning the Billboard Music Award for Top Latin Album, Billboard
Latin Award for Latin Album of the Year and Latin Pop Album of the Year. it
also scored a nomination for Latin Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
With more than 100 million albums sold worldwide, Iglesias
is already hailed as one of the bestselling Spanish language artists of all
time, as well as one of the bestselling solo performers of his time. He also holds
the record for producing 23 number-one Spanish-language singles on the
Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks. All in all Iglesias has scored 70 number-one
rankings on different Billboard charts, such that he has been named The King of
Latin Pop and The King of Dance. Together with Luis Miguel, Billboard honored Enrique
as the Latin artist of the years 1986–2011.
